Breed Characteristics

Adaptability

Apartment Friendly

4 stars

An adult Mioritic Sheepdog needs plenty of space to run around with a large backyard. They love to play, just let them outside.

Barking Tendencies

Cat Friendly

Child Friendly

3 stars

Good with Kids: It is particularly gentle with children – although its sheer size can cause problems for youngsters who are unsteady on their feet.

Dog Friendly

3 stars

Mioritic Shepherd Dog are average friendly towards cats, dogs and other pets.

Exercise Needs

4 stars

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog is not an overly active breed, but he does require a fair bit of daily exercise.

Grooming

2 stars

Low Maintenance: Even though Mioritic dogs have a long coat, they are fairly low-maintenance dogs. Their undercoat is water resistant, so frequent baths aren't recommended as that can diminish their natural water-proofing. Just a weekly brushing and an occasional trim by a groomer is typically what is needed in the grooming department for Mioritic sheepdogs.

Health Issues

2 stars

Hypoallergenic: No Mioritics are healthy dogs, but there are some health issues you may have to check on regularly at the vet.

Shedding Level

5 stars

Moderate Shedding: Expect this dog to shed regularly. Be prepared to vacuum often. Brushing will reduce shedding as well as make the coat softer and cleaner.

Stranger Friendly

2 stars

As with any dog breed, proper socialisation as a pup is essential. This is especially true for the Mioritic, given his combination of strength, potential for aggression, and suspicion of strangers. A poorly socialised and wary Mioritic is not a dog a stranger would want to meet on a dark night.

Trainability

4 stars

Moderately Easy Training: The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog is a very smart and disciplined breed which means that he responds well to training. Because this breed was developed for guarding livestock, however, he can sometimes develop a bit of an independent streak and may be quite stubborn at times.

Watchdog Ability

5 stars

Great Watchdog Ability: They take that tenacity and responsibility into the home as well, patrolling the yard or house, watching for signs of trouble and alerting their owners before positioning themselves as a barrier between strangers or other types of impending danger. It is a good watchdog for herds and houses.

Overview

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog, also called the Mioritic Shepherd Dog, Romanian Mioritic and Ciobănesc Românesc Mioritic, is a giant breed of livestock guardian dog that originated in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. The male Mioritic stands about 70–75 centimetres (28–30 in) tall at the withers with the female slightly smaller at 65–70 centimetres (26–28 in). This massive dog is covered in thick fluffy hair. It may be white, with or without pale grey or cream patches, or pale grey or cream all over. The dog should have a "vigorous" appearance. Sexual dimorphism is evident in this breed, with males being significantly larger than females.

The Mioritic Sheepdog dog is vivid and balanced; alert and vigilant, disciplined and very attached to its owner, but suspicious with strangers. An incorruptible guard and a wonderful pet. In the home, the Romanian Mioritic often become exceptionally attached to their families, showing copious amounts of loyalty and a fair amount of affection to boot, employing patience and gentleness with children and generally maintaining regular obedience. They also have a considerable amount of energy and will become frustrated or restless if not properly exercised, so they generally do best with an active family or one with a large yard they can regularly roam and burn off some energy. If they receive proper socialization, training, and exercise, they are a fantastic all-around breed and will reward their families with nearly limitless devotion.

History

The Mioritic Sheepdog dog is a very old Romanian breed, which was preserved along the years thanks to shepherds. It is widely spread in Sibiu and Brasov areas. It seems that the origins of this breed are even older; dogs similar to the Mioritic Shepherd were the ones who accompanied Celtic tribes during migrations. Also, dogs with characteristics of the Mioritic Shepherd were brought by Tartars to the North of the Black Sea and around the Caspian Sea, from there it spread to Moldavia. Nowadays, this dog is very popular in Romania and not only, due to its imposing look and courage and is considered by some the only dog that can survive when attacked by a bear.
